He didn't mean to talk to her.
He came back through Creeford's lower quarter, the mill path coming out at the stream-crossing below the chandler's row, and she was there at the crossing with her shoes off, standing in the shallows doing something deliberate and specific with a stick, the way children do things — an activity with its own internal logic that did not require an audience. She was eleven. She had her father's build, was his first and involuntary thought: the same slight solidity, something in the set of the shoulders that he recognised from the residue. He had not thought it would work that way — the resemblance moving through the cold coin like light through a crack.
She looked up when she heard him on the path.
"You're the sin-eater," she said.
Not a question. He stopped on the bank. The water was clear and cold-looking, the bottom stones visible, the stick she'd been working with standing upright where she'd planted it.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at him with the assessment of a child who has recently been introduced to the fact that the world contains genuine danger and is updating her working model. Not afraid. Operational. He had the sense she had decided in advance that she was not going to be afraid of the things she'd already encountered.
"Geva said you might be around," she said.
"Did she say anything else."
"She said you were trying to fix things." The girl's voice was flat around the edges. Not angry — she'd used her anger on the relevant target and had nothing left for him, or she was still working out where he went in the ledger of the situation. "She says that to lots of people. She thinks most people are trying to fix things."
He came down to the bank and sat on a flat stone, which put him at roughly her eye level. She didn't step back.
"Was your father a good man," he said. He didn't know why he asked this. He asked it the way you ask a question that's been forming for a while without your permission.
She thought about it seriously. This impressed him more than he'd expected — she didn't default to yes the way children did, the loyal yes that cost nothing. She actually thought about it. Then: "He was good at his work. He was good to us. He wasn't—" She squinted at the opposite bank, picking her words. "He owed Aldous the tanner some money and he kept saying he'd sort it and he never did. He thought bad weather was bad omens." A pause. "He told the same two jokes for years and they weren't funny the first time."
Something happened in the Weight. Not Conn's residue specifically — not the green-wood smell, not the voice that had always been too low to resolve. Something softer: the quality of a person remembered the way living people remember other living people, with the small accumulated irritations preserved alongside the love, the debt and the jokes and the not-funny-the-first-time. Rook had never heard Conn remembered that way. He'd eaten Conn's sins (which were small: the list had been thin, the coin had been cold) and he'd known the shape of Conn's experience the way the thin-sight allowed — but he had not known what it was like to be inside a house with Conn, irritated by the same two jokes.
He said: "He had a way of checking his work. Feeling it — the joins on a wheel, running his hands along the spokes to find the flex." He hadn't meant to say this either. "That's what I carry. That particular attention."
She looked at him. Direct. Not afraid of the directness. "You feel my father."
"When it surfaces."
She was quiet, looking at him with those operational eyes. Then: "Is he alright."
The theology said: yes, certainly yes, shriven and gone clean. The Church had an answer for this question and Rook had been trained to give it and had given it to dozens of people, widows and children and fathers, the formula that existed precisely for this moment.
He said: "I ate his sins. That's the rite. The Church says it means he's gone clean."
"But what do you think."
He looked at her for a moment. She was eleven and waiting. He said: "I think he's not here anymore. I think what I carry is — what stayed. His hands' memory. Not him."
She considered this. It was not the answer that comforted, and she seemed to know it was not the answer that comforted, and she accepted it with the same operational flatness with which she'd accepted the world containing danger. "Alright," she said.
"You asked."
"I know I asked." She pulled the stick out of the water and studied its end. "Geva says I shouldn't go back to Wethering."
"Probably not. Not yet."
"She said someone's going to try to fix what happened to him. To all of them." The girl's voice had changed pitch slightly — the specific register of someone repeating something they want to believe but are not yet sure they believe. "She means you."
"Among others."
She threw the stick into the stream and watched it go. "He would've thought that was — he would've said you can't fix dead." Another pause, longer. "He was bad at politics. He used to say anyone who tried to change how the Church did things was a fool. He said it was like trying to steer the river." She looked at where the stick had gone, around the crossing stones. "Then they took him anyway, so."
Rook said nothing. There was nothing to say to that. She had just explained, with the economy of eleven years of clear-eyed observation, the total argument against her father's worldview.
"I'm not going to go to Wethering for a while," she said, with the air of someone announcing a decision that she had arrived at herself. "I'm going to stay here. Geva has things for me to do." She looked back at him. "She has things for everyone to do."
"She does."
The girl seemed to feel that this was enough. She came out of the stream and sat on the bank and began putting her shoes back on with the absolute concentration of a person for whom wet feet are a concrete problem with a concrete solution.

The Weight did something it had never done before.
Rook was on his feet, turning toward the town, when it happened: not a surfacing of one of his eleven, not the cold measuring attention of the unknown fragment, but something that landed briefly at the border between the cold coins and the sour mass — something that had been sitting in the sour pile and was now, briefly, not.
He stood still.
It was not Conn. He knew Conn's cold-coin character; it had a green-wood smell and the shape of a working man's days. This was different — older, he thought, though he didn't know how the Weight communicated age. Simpler. A residue with less interior space to it, as if whoever it had been had lived more narrowly. A woman — that impression, without knowing why he had it, the Weight's textures not being precise about bodies. A feeling of heat. A fire, specifically. The specific physical relationship to a fire of someone who sat at one frequently.
And then it was back in the sour mass, mixed in, gone, and he could not find it again.
He turned back. The girl had finished with her shoes. She looked up at him.
"What's wrong."
"Nothing," he said. Then, because she had just taught him that she preferred honest answers: "Something came up in the Weight that I couldn't identify. It happens."
"You can't identify your own dead?"
"Four hundred of them. The ones who were guilty come together in a mass after a while. I lose the individuals." He paused. "Usually they don't come back out again once they've mixed in."
She absorbed this. "But this one did."
"For a moment."
She looked at him with a specific expression — not horror, not pity, something more methodical. "That sounds," she said carefully, "like it would be very strange to live with."
"Yes," he said. "It is."
She seemed to find this satisfactory — that he'd agreed with her, that he hadn't performed an adjustment of the truth to make it sound better. She nodded once, the nod of a person who has gotten a straight answer and knows what to do with it, and stood up.
"Geva will want to know what happened with the old brother," she said.
"She will."
"Then you should go tell her." She adjusted her coat — a motion very like her father's adjustment of his work-apron in the residue, the unconscious preparatory gesture. "I'll be in later."
She walked off along the bank. He watched her go for a moment, and then the cold coin that had been Conn of Wethering sat in its precise place and said nothing, and the sour mass sat in its place and said nothing, and the girl disappeared around the crossing stones and was gone.
He turned toward the quarry-foreman's house.
The unknown fragment stirred once, faintly, in what felt almost like the way a person shifts their weight from one foot to the other. Resettling. Waiting.
He stopped.
The fragment's quality was different, on the bank, than it had been under Geva's voice or on the mill path. Both those times it had been the measuring attention — focused, directed, professional. What it was now was quieter. More diffuse. The particular texture of a person who is not performing attention but simply inhabiting it. Listening. Not to anything in particular.
He stood at the stream's edge a moment longer than he meant to.
He had been thinking of the unknown fragment as — not an enemy, not exactly a stranger either, but a foreign presence. Something that didn't belong. The categories the Church gave him were clear: the Weight was his to carry; what lived in it was what he'd eaten; the thin-sight was the permitted residue of those he'd consumed. He had categories for cold coins and for sour ones, and the unknown fragment had appeared inside neither and remained.
But standing at a stream bank where a girl had stood with her shoes off, talking about a father she was adjusting to being without, the fragment had not surged forward or pressed or sought to speak. It had just been there, the way another person is in a room, present but not intruding.
He did not know what to do with this.
The Church would call it contamination. Cassock had called it, broadly, the going-under — the self beginning to dissolve, the boundaries between Rook and the Weight becoming porous and unreliable. But Cassock hadn't described this. Cassock had described the hands doing unexpected things, the voices of guards indistinguishable from victims, the progressive erasure of the man beneath the office. He had not described something that sat quietly beside you at a stream while a child talked about her father's bad jokes.
Rook started walking.
He noted, carefully, that he'd just described the fragment sitting beside him. As if it had been beside him on the bank. As if it had a position. He filed this — filed it in the place he filed things he couldn't resolve on a road, which was getting crowded — and walked toward the quarry-foreman's house.
He would tell Geva what Inwald had said. They would make the plan. Aldenmere was two days east, manageable, and the notary Petras was the shape of something that might work if the world cooperated even a little, which it rarely did but occasionally, in small ugly ways, could be made to.
He kept walking.

The quarry's afternoon shift was audible from the back lane. He passed two workers going the other direction, both of whom registered him — sin-eater, the coat, the face — and both of whom found reasons to look elsewhere, the usual adjustment, the buffer of empty space people maintained. He let them. One of them quickened his pace a little before they'd passed. A man who had learned that proximity to a sin-eater was the kind of thing that, in the current year of the Pale Mercy, someone might mention to a duty-brother. Rook did not take it personally. He had been that kind of dangerous for a while now.
Geva was at the table with a piece of paper, writing something that she turned over when he came in, which meant it was the list Aldric had guessed about, the one she'd never said aloud she was thinking of handing off. She looked at him. He told her what Inwald had said — one name, a woman in Aldenmere, Canon law training, a notary's standing, angry rather than careful.
"Petras," Geva said.
"You know her."
"I know of her. She came through here three years ago, on her way east." She looked at the turned-over paper. Then she turned it back over, which told him he'd read the situation correctly, that she'd already made the decision and was only working out the logistics. "We should go soon."
"Yes."
"Before the chapterhouse traces the road."
"Yes."
She looked at him. "You're not going to tell me what Inwald said about the texts."
It was not a question. She'd read something in his face, or in the fact that he hadn't mentioned it, which he hadn't — he'd given her the content of the conversation relevant to their plan and left out the part about passages in suppressed Canon law and what a sin-eater actually becomes.
He said: "Not yet."
She didn't press this. She had, he thought, a working sense of the difference between information that was relevant to the plan and information that was relevant to him, and she left the second category alone. He was obscurely grateful for this without wanting to examine why.
